Traditionally sequins have been used in both costumes and crafts, but lately I have noticed the versatility of this fabulous little item. Sequins are also great value, you can create an effective look with less product than you would need with beads.
Star Style with Portia de Rossi - Navette Ring23 April, 2009
In this months new issue of Australian beading I have one of my favourite celebrity style projects featured. It’s the stunning engagement ring that Ellen DeGeneres gave the gorgeous Portia de Rossi. The original is a Neil Lane, and features a diamond in the centre with ribbons of pink diamonds all set in white gold.
For my take I have used a navette stone and strips of wire wrapped light amethyst 3mm swarovski crystals, carefully wire wrapped into this neat stylish ring. “Portia” Ring Kit $7.20 AUD - Available at WishWare Beads

Star Style with Ginnifer GoodwinWhen one of my favourite actors, Ginnifer Goodwin attended the premiere of her latest movie He’s Just Not That Into You wearing this gorgeous statement, I just knew that I had to use this as our first example of celebrity style in our bead blog. This round necklace formation with flowers is a very popular style of necklace in Hollywood at the moment with quite a few Oscar jewellery pieces following the same general structure. The original looks to be based on copper wire with Baltic amber beads. Different varieties of amber cause differences in tone. “Ginnifer” Necklace $42 AUD - available at WishWare BeadsFor my take on this piece, I have used the Czech glass diamonds in a topaz ab and smokey topaz ab combined with some copper Swarovski crystals wired into flower formations to create the same effect. It’s a rather chunky necklace and just looks amazing draped over a top or jumper.
New Product : Brads used in Beading7 April, 2009A lot of customers ask me why they would or how they could incorporate a traditional scrap-booking product into a beading project. It’s a really simple process and with many scrap-booking products being very reasonable in price, using them is an effective and fun way to expand your designs. One packet of scrap-booking items can quite often create multiple amounts of projects when teamed with the correct findings. To convert a brad to a cabochon: you need to turn the brad over to the back and then fully extend the prong section of the brad. Trim this section off and you now have the flat surface to either glue the cabochon backing or simply adhere straight onto the bail or ring bases. The examples I have used have been created from only two packets of brads (with some being left over in the packet - these could create another 1-2 projects each).
